You've probably heard the expression "I slept like a baby!" to indicate someone has slept well and may even use the phrase. Regardless of the existence of a well-rested baby, there are plenty of things you can do to ensure a good night's sleep.

Babies have different sleep patterns than adults, and their sleep needs vary depending on their age and development. According to various sources, here are some general facts about how much time babies sleep and how often they wake up upset:
- Newborns (0 to 3 months old) do not have a regular sleep schedule and may sleep anywhere from 11 to 19 hours a day 1. They usually wake up every 2 to 3 hours to feed, and may cry or grizzle at the end of each sleep cycle, which lasts about 40 minutes 23.
- Infants (4 to 11 months old) start to develop a circadian rhythm, which is a natural pattern of sleep and wakefulness that follows the day and night cycle. They may sleep for 12 to 15 hours a day, with 3 to 4 naps during the day and longer stretches of sleep at night 1. They may still wake up occasionally at night, especially if they are teething, sick, or going through a growth spurt 4.
- Toddlers (1 to 2 years old) need about 11 to 14 hours of sleep a day, with 1 to 2 naps during the day and a longer sleep at night 1. They may wake up less frequently at night, but they may also have more difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep due to separation anxiety, nightmares, or bedtime resistance 4.
Of course, these are only average estimates, and every baby is different. Some babies may sleep more or less than others, and some may have more or less trouble sleeping than others. The best way to help your baby sleep well is to follow a consistent bedtime routine, create a comfortable and safe sleeping environment, and respond to your baby’s cues and needs 4.
